With the onset of the coronavirus, many planned projects had to be cancelled or postponed. However, our chapter was able to adapt and continue to serve the community. Our major projects for the fall 2021 semester were:

  • 20th-Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Concert: In 2021, we collaborated with the University of Louisville Collegiate Chorale to host a 9/11 memorial concert outside Ekstrom Library.

  • Trunk or Treat: Our largest event, members of our organization hand out candy and run games for neighborhood children during Halloween. We had a large turnout this past year and are looking forward to a larger one next year!

  • Flower Sales: We host flower sales during commencement for graduating students. During Spring 2021 Commencement, we also assisted in escorting graduates onto the football field. Last fall we raised $2180 from these sales.

In past years, we’ve invited speakers onto campus, worked with off-campus charities, helped the Sister Cities of Louisville, and more!

During the 2020-2021 school year, we were also distinguished as a leading chapter with a Golden Torch Award.

We were also in works to host a TEDx event in March 2022 in conjunction with the Urban & Public Affairs Student Association; however, this event was postponed until  at least 2023.

*More information about, and images from, the events are below*

9/11 Memorial Concert

The University of Louisville Collegiate Chorale, conducted by Dr. Kent Hatteberg, held a 9/11 memorial concert at the steps of the University of Louisville Ekstrom library. This event marked the 20th anniversary of 9/11. The flyer for the event is pictured to the right. For more information, visit the University of Louisville: School of Music website.

Trunk-Or-Treat

As is a long-standing tradition for our chapter, the University of Louisville trunk-or-treat had been previously held each year in late October hosted exclusively by our Mortar Board chapter. Although it was cancelled in 2020 (as a result of the covid pandemic), we were able to host in fall 2021 with covid precautions and social distancing. It was held in the large parking lot of Cardinal Stadium.

The event was successful with hundreds of families from the community coming by to participate in the trunk-or-treat, games, puzzles, and costume contests. Volunteers included members of UofL's Society of Physics Students and local High School Beta Clubs (including Atherton, Butler, Male, and duPont Manual).

Commencement Flower Sales

Each year during both fall and winter commencement, the chapter sells roses and teddy bears before the commencement ceremony. Last fall we were able to generate over twenty-one hundred dollars in funds by selling all our flowers.

December Flower Sales
Hey everyone,
This is Louis Curtis with our Mortar Board Honor Society. I want to begin gathering names of people able to volunteer for our flower sales at the December Commencement ceremony. In recent years, flower sales have been our strongest and most consistent source of funding for our organization, so it’s important to sell as much as we can.The event is at 7pm on December 18th, and we will need our volunteers there by 5:30 pm to begin setup and sales. I have headed our sales the last two years, but these next two semesters I need someone else to take the lead as I will be participating in the ceremony. I will still have the flowers delivery to my house and I will bring them to the ceremony, but I will need someone to lead our sales, collect the money, and clean up our space after the event. If you are able to help in any way, please “reply all” to this email and let me know. I know many of you will be out of town due to winter break, but we are open to as much help as we can get. Last semester, we did not have enough volunteers and I would definitely like to avoid that situation again!
Thanks!
Louis Curtis
